IPS represented in a workshop on ‘Energy System Analytics’, held in Istanbul
IPS’ Research Officer Mohammad Wali Farooqi represented the Institute in a three-day training workshop on ‘Energy System Analytics’ held in Istanbul, Turkey from July 2-4, 2024. The training was organized by INETTT (International Network of Energy Transition Think Tanks) Secretariat in collaboration with the Energy Data and Modelling Team from Agora Energiewende, and hosted by the SHURA Energy Transition Center.
The training covered an introduction to energy systems, data visualization, and storytelling through data, and energy data processing on the first day. The second day focused on narratives and visualization, explaining the visual vocabulary of charts and identifying effective and ineffective charts with participants, building compelling narratives from datasets and presenting them to the audience. The day concluded with a session on producing next-generation visualizations from static to dynamic graphs using various software tools. The third day included energy modeling and interpreting model results, discussing scenario-based policy tools and models, and engaging in practical exercises.
Farooqi and his group participated in a modeling-based group exercise on the third day, and presented a case study on energy demand forecasting 2045 in Jeonbuk Province, South Korea. The purpose of the presentation was to discuss the model used in this study. Wali led the main analysis and forecasted a declining trend in oil consumption at the industrial level in Jeonbuk Province from 2030 to 2045. The other group members, hailing from Mexico, Philippines, and South Korea, also participated in the discussion and presented their additional findings.
