About the Book

UN peacekeeping forms an important tenet of Pakistan’s foreign policy. Pakistan began participating in UN peacekeeping operations in 1960. Since then the country has earned the distinction of being one of the most consistent and professional peacekeepers. Along the way, it has acquired the reputation of being one of the largest troop contributing countries among the UN member states. However, very little has been written about the subject by Pakistani scholars. This drought in written work has done great injustice to the accomplishments of Pakistani peacekeepers and to national peacekeeping philosophy. This book covers the glaringly obvious gap in the existing corpus of UN peacekeeping literature and gives voice to Pakistani scholars and practitioners on this subject. It covers a wide array of topics ranging from foreign policy motivations to modern trends in peacekeeping and how Pakistan is adapting to these emerging challenges. It also brings out the lessons learnt from various operations. This work represents the ideas and thoughts of veteran peacekeepers, professors and students of the Centre for International Peace & Stability (CIPS), an institution which is recognized by the UN as the world’s leading peacekeeping training school. This book of collected works is meant to be a standard textbook for those studying the subject of peacekeeping
