IPS represented in INETT meeting on ‘Global Energy Efficiency – Challenges and Opportunities’
Energy efficiency holds paramount significance in dealing with the energy affordability and inflation reduction. Pakistan, on the other hand, has witnessed some pressing issues in controlling the standard efficiencies in the power sector, both on the supply as well as demand side. While the regulations exist to create the efficient power sector, the implementation mechanisms are lacking, which creates a void in proper functioning.
These points were raised during an online meeting ‘Global Energy Efficiency – Challenges and Opportunities’, which was organized by INETTT – International Network of Energy Transition Think Tanks, on October 26, 2022. Chaired by Katy Levitt Clarke, senior clean energy advisor to the US Department of State’s Bureau of Energy Resources, the meeting attended by the representatives from Germany, Indonesia and Mexico, was partaken on behalf of IPS by its energy desk members Hamza Naeem and Lubna Riaz.
The meeting meant to share the experiences and knowledge between the member countries and it was maintained that the imminent issue of climate change can be directly linked with the energy efficiency, where it can be easily understood that the fossil fuels are excessively required to burn for generation of unusable energy in an inefficient power sector.
It was also pointed out that the practices adopted by United States to improve energy efficiency in generation, transmission, distribution, appliance manufacturing and transport sector are well evident and have the potential to transit towards the complete energy efficient technology.
Furthermore, the requirement of capacity building and awareness was also demonstrated as a major step to curb the inefficiencies in the power systems. Over this, the chair of the session endorsed the proposal to pursue the consideration of joint activities on policy making and advisory between Pakistan and the Unites States.
