SPEAKERS’ PROFILES

 

Dr Tamara Sonn

Dr Tamara Sonn is a renowned academic from the US who specializes in Islamic and religious studies. She is the director of the Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, and a Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani Professor in the History of Islam at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University. Earlier, she has most notably been associated with the College of William and Mary, University of South Florida and Temple University.

Sonn has also served as the editorial board member of various journals including as a senior editor of Oxford Research Encyclopedia in Religion (2003) and the founding editor-in-chief of Religion Compass (2005) and Studies in Contemporary Islam (1995).

A Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from the University of Chicago, Sonn studies Islam from historical, political, regional and other contemporary contexts and perspectives. She has 14 publications and over 100 chapters and articles to her credit, and her work has been translated into Arabic, Bengali, German, Portuguese, Korean, and Russian languages.

 

Prof Dr Anis Ahmad

Prof Dr Anis Ahmad is a renowned academic and a social scientist of international repute. He carries a Ph.D. from the Temple University, Pennsylvania, USA and has held numerous academic leadership positions both nationally and internationally. Currently he is the vice chancellor of Riphah International University (RIU). Previously he has served as the vice president of International Islamic University, Islamabad and dean of Faculty of Islamic Revealed Knowledge & Human Sciences, International Islamic University, Malaysia. He has authored and edited a number of books and articles and writes on contemporary social, political and cultural issues.
