Need of highlighting maritime issues accentuated before media students
An overview of maritime domain was given to the students of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Karachi (UoK) on March 19, 2021 to sensitize the to take up projects and research assignments related to the diverse area.
The speakers including IPS Non-Resident Fellow Dr Maliha Zeba Khan, Assistant Professor Karachi University Samina Qureshi and GM-IPS Naufil Shahrukh gave an overview of the maritime domain and presented several ideas on creating exciting media content on maritime science, economy, tourism, coastal communities, politics and security, law, environment and sustainable development, etc.
Highlighting various dimensions of maritime domain for better understanding of students, Khan stressed on covering concerning topics like marine life, marine economy, marine tourism, marine archeology, food, energy and sustainable development of marine communities in the media content effectively. She also apprised them on the role that seas and fisheries can play in meeting protein-rich food supplies whose demand is constantly increasing worldwide.
The speaker also stressed on the need to adopt a blue governance strategy by treating the ocean and seas as one unit. She was of the view that since warm waters are a lifeline for any economy, Pakistan too needs to produce ocean entrepreneurs who can exploit the potential of maritime sports, tourism and extraction of minerals, coral reefs and its preservation. Taking care of the marine environment, she emphasized, is obligatory for the growth of the economy, and the media students can play a key role in this regard.
