AbstractThe Special issue of Policy Perspectives on “China and SAARC” is based on the deliberations of a conference, titled as “China-SAARC: Towards a Better Understanding through Enhanced People to People Exchanges” held on July 26 and 27, 2011 in Kunming, China. The present volume consists of the papers of this conference and is being presented jointly by China Institute of International Studies, Beijing, Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences, Kunming and Institute of Policy Studies, Islamabad. Along with the research based articles this issue also brings to its readers papers and comments presented in the conference so that various dynamics of the subject can be shared with a larger audience particularly those who are interested in the form of one publication. One significance of the articles is that these have been written by scholars from all major SAARC members, along with a majority by the Chinese scholars who are considered experts on South Asian Affairs in China. So, at one hand this volume presents the various perspectives found in South Asia regarding relations with China, and on the other hand it reflects the thoughts of the Chinese scholars on the subject. While this volume has not been prepared in any definite scheming, the articles and papers cover three broad areas, political and security cooperation, cooperation in economic spheres, and people to people contacts.
